Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy involves the treatment of a diseased or dead tooth nerve.
While a dead or diseased tooth nerve can sometimes cause severe pain, it can also go unnoticed for several years. It is important to treat these dead nerves, since there is a risk that the bacteria will spread to the neighbouring tissues and cause inflammation both inside and around the tooth.
Generally, in a root canal treatment, the nerve is removed from the tooth and replaced with a sterile root canal filling paste. The nerve tissue is completely removed, all the way up to the root tip. Root canal treatment can be used to maintain a tooth that would otherwise have needed to be pulled. The duration of root canal treatment varies depending on the individual case. Your dentist will endeavour to perform the root canal treatment as quickly and with as little discomfort as possible.
